Goose Hollow Through the Years

Long before Byline, Tanner Creek carved a deep ravine through this area. Small farms lined the hills, and geese wandered freely among them—giving Goose Hollow its distinctive name. In the late 1800s, frequent squabbles over the geese led The Oregonian’s founder, Thomas J. Dryer, to refer to the area as “Goose Hollow” in print—a name that stuck. By the turn of the century, streetcar lines connected the neighborhood to downtown, and the area began to grow.
