Art Wandering in Goose Hollow

Murals, sculptures, sidewalk surprises and curiously familiar crosswalk art await! Lace up your running shoes or slap on the flip flops and get ready for an afternoon of art.

Swaying Grace: Moving slowly in the breeze outside of the new Byline Apartments, the 27-foot-tall steel reeds of this kinetic sculpture by Wynia Lang and Kim David Hall is inspired by the marshes that once lined Tanner Creek as it flowed through the Goose Hollow neighborhood. The creek is still nearby, but it runs underground on its way to the Willamette River.

Byline Blown Glass: Peer into the residential lobby at the new Byline Apartments at the Press Blocks. Don’t worry, they won’t mind. The substantial blown glass installation includes over 500 individual pieces and is the work of Oregon artist Andy Paiko. The location was once the site of the former Oregonian printing press, and the art is inspired by the rotary press and the large reams of newsprint used to bring the paper to Oregon residents each day.

Crosswalk Scarves: The Byline Apartments team is so excited to be a part of the Goose Hollow community. So much so, in fact, the team partnered with The Timbers and The Thorns FC to create some very special crosswalks. If the patterns and words seem familiar, it is because they are taken from supporter scarves. Taylor Street celebrates The Timbers: RCTID (Rose City ’Til I Die) while the MAX station crosswalk honors The Thorns: PTFC (Portland Thorns Football Club).

She Flies With Her Own Wings: Peek around the corner at Gate F of Providence Park (right by the team store). A mural created to celebrate the inaugural season of The Thorns in 2013, “She Flies With Her Own Wings” is an interpretation of Oregon’s state motto, “Alis Volat Propriis”. Translated to she flies with her own wings, the motto honors the independent spirit of Oregonians, and of course of The Thorns FC players!

Trail of Impressions: Look down as you walk along SW 18th from Civic Stadium Station to SW Jefferson. Fifteen sidewalk panels showcase stories that were suggested by a group of Goose Hollow residents and then designed by artist Bill Will and executed by Matt Wuerker. From honoring a ski ramp built inside the stadium in 1951 to celebrating the first female teacher in Portland, the tiles
tell a story of a
vibrant neighborhood.

Bart Art: Matt Groening is a Goose Hollow guy! A 1972 graduate of Lincoln High School, Matt took a break from working on “The Simpsons” and came back to his neighborhood to leave a little Bart Art. Drawn in wet cement, Bart Simpson greets students and alumni at 18th & Salmon, just outside of the high school.

Civic Plaza Station (Westbound): Have something to say? The Civic Plaza Station gives you a stage to stand on and say it! Bronze podiums, a tree trunk, a big box and pedestal are waiting for you to tell your story. Known as a “speaker’s corner,” the interactive art was designed by Tad Savinar and cast by Walla Walla Foundry.
